Our Garden

This year we got rid of our square foot garden and planted one in the ground. Jason cut down a huge ugly bush on the side of our house so we could use that area to plant the garden. He says he's going to show me how to grow some veggies, because I was never really successful with my other garden.
Zander really wanted to plant some seeds. So he looked through what I had and decided he liked grape tomatoes. He walked around with the seed packet for a while before we were ready for him to plant them. When we told him to come plant his seeds, he had dropped most of them so he only had 2 left. He planted them, but they didn't ever sprout. :(

We planted onions, carrots, lettuce, spinach, tomotoes (regular & grape), green peppers, cucumbers, and jalepenos.
Mason just played while we planted the garden. He helped mix the dirt with his rake. Other than that, he didn't act real interested. But the next day, I got the hose out to water and he really wanted to help, so I left him have at it. He looked especially cute in his crocs :)

You can see in his face he was really excited and into his little job!

I will try to keep you updated on our Garden's progress. I'm hoping everything will grow nicely!

Garden Tending

I started this post a while ago, so I guess I should finish it up. This is my garden as of the 20th of May. It has grown quite a bit since then. We've had a lot of rain which has defiantly helped! My cucumbers have gotten pretty big and needed something to climb on so they don't take over the whole garden. I had my husband put together this little net for them to climb on. It seems to work well.

Jason also was kind enough to make this cover for my garden to keep out whatever pest was eating my veggies. He didn't really like how it turned out, but I think it looks great. & it certainly does the job, some of my lettuce has started growing back.

I've noticed some little bugs in my garden and had this recipe from one of my garden group sessions. I had all the stuff to make it so I did. I'm hoping it helps, so I'll let you know. If you'd like to try, the recipe is below.
2 TBSP of hot sauce
Few drops of liquid soap
Water
Mix all ingredients together, let sit for 24 hours. Shake and spray on garden.

I have no idea how much water to use, so I just used a 16 oz bottle of water. I sprayed it on my garden today (May 28th) and breathing it almost killed me, so I think it should work.

Growing, Growing, Gone!

Look at my beautiful square foot garden. Everything is growing pretty well. My tomato plants are rather small, but they are growing. My lettuce and my spinach are doing very well. The carrots and the onions appear to be doing well, too. My cucumber plants are getting bigger, I'm hoping they start to produce soon.

This is a nice close up of my pretty romaine lettuce. It looks like it would make a great salad. Too bad I didn't get to find out. Because I wasn't feeling too well the past couple of days, I didn't pick anything. I did have plans of making a nice salad with it, though.

I went out today to pick some lettuce and spinach to put in a salad for dinner, when I reached my garden I notice the plants looked much smaller than they had yesterday. Something has eaten my nice green veggies. I was a bit disappointed. There was some of the leafy lettuce, but all my spinach and my romaine lettuce had been eaten. Good thing I had picked some of the spinach and put it in my fridge. I'm guessing it was birds, but I'm not real sure. Do you have any suggestions on how to keep them away??
